GBC Completes Phase 3 Land Reclamation at Awaso (Suburi)

Operations

Ghana Bauxite Company has successfully completed Phase 3 of its progressive land reclamation programme at the Awaso mine site in the Western Region of Ghana. The completion of this phase returns over 120 hectares of rehabilitated land to productive community and agricultural use.

The reclamation process involved re-grading of previously mined areas, replacement of topsoil stockpiled during extraction, and replanting with a mix of indigenous plant species selected for their soil-binding and biodiversity value. The programme was developed in consultation with the Forestry Commission of Ghana and local community stakeholders.

GBC’s Environmental Manager noted that the company tracks reclamation performance against a set of ecological recovery indicators, including vegetation cover, species diversity, and soil stability. Phase 3 areas have met or exceeded all baseline targets set at the outset of the programme.

Land reclamation is a central pillar of GBC’s environmental commitments under its operating licence. All mining areas are subject to progressive rehabilitation, with completed sections returned to productive use before operations move to new areas.

Phase 4 of the reclamation programme is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2025.
