Parliament Ratifies 30-Year Mining Lease for Ghana Bauxite Company

Governance

The Parliament of Ghana has unanimously ratified the mining lease granted to Ghana Bauxite Company Limited for its bauxite mining operations at Awaso in the Western North Region. The ratification of the 30-year lease marks a significant milestone for the company and for Ghana’s mining sector.

The Parliamentary ratification provides GBC with unparalleled legal stability and long-term certainty for its operations — a critical foundation for the capital investment and strategic planning required to grow Ghana’s bauxite industry.

Unlike many mining operations that rely on administrative licences subject to periodic renewal, the Parliamentary ratification confers constitutional standing on GBC’s tenure, providing an exceptionally strong basis for securing long-term financing and investment partnerships.

Executive Chairman’s Statement

Executive Chairman Mr. Isaac Ofori-Poku described the ratification as “a defining moment” for the company:

“The ratification of our 30-year mining lease by the Parliament of Ghana marks a pivotal moment for our company, enabling us to expand our operations and enhance our capacity for bauxite extraction. We are grateful to the Government of Ghana and to Parliament for the confidence they have placed in Ghana Bauxite Company.”

Foundation for Growth

The lease underpins GBC’s plans to increase annual production capacity to 2.5 million metric tonnes — up from the record 1.8 million metric tonnes achieved in 2024 — as well as longer-term ambitions to develop an integrated alumina refinery within Ghana.

The Government of Ghana retains a 20% equity stake in GBC through the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), while Ofori-Poku Company Limited holds the remaining 80%. Both shareholders were reported to be in full support of the ratification.
